What We Score On

Every brand is scored on the same five axes, weighted to reflect what matters most for canine health and owner trust. The overall score is a weighted average.

30%

Ingredient Quality

Named species protein, whole-food carbs, freedom from artificial preservatives.

25%

Nutritional Balance

FEDIAF / AAFCO compliance, life-stage-appropriate macros, omega-3:6 ratio.

20%

Transparency

Public ingredient list, named percentages, manufacturing location, sourcing detail.

15%

Value

Cost-per-day for an average 20kg dog, weighed against quality tier.

10%

Sustainability & Ethics

B Corp or equivalent, UK manufacturing, recyclable packaging, published commitments.

Concern Flags Explained

Independent of the score, brands flagged for any of the following display a warning chip on their page. These are facts, not opinions: each chip is triggered by what's named on the brand's own ingredient list or guaranteed analysis.

Artificial colours

Recipes containing E-numbered or named artificial colourants.

BHA / BHT

Synthetic preservatives sometimes used for fat oxidation. Restricted at higher levels in human food.

Ethoxyquin

A synthetic preservative used historically in some fishmeal-based recipes; banned in EU human food.

Added sugar

Sucrose, caramel, or similar added for palatability or colour.

Meat derivatives

EU labelling category permitting unspecified species in the recipe.

Unspecified EU additives

"EC permitted additives" or similar wording without naming the additive.

High grain filler

Wheat, maize, rice, or soya combined exceed 50% of the recipe by mass.

High salt

Salt content above 1% in the guaranteed analysis.

What This Directory Isn't

This directory is an editorial review of publicly available product information from each brand's UK website. It is not veterinary nutritional advice, a diagnostic tool, or a laboratory analysis.

We do not laboratory-test foods, we do not have access to manufacturing facilities, and we do not receive private formulation details. Where information isn't disclosed by a brand, we mark it accordingly. Brands may reformulate at any time; we refresh data quarterly. If you're a brand representative and our information is outdated, please use the right-of-reply form.

Missing a brand you'd like to see?

Tell us. We review submissions at every quarterly refresh and add brands that meet the editorial bar (publicly available ingredient list, UK product page, no commercial relationship with us).

The UK Dog Food Directory is an informational tool. It does not diagnose disease, replace veterinary advice, or constitute a medical opinion. Brand reformulations, price changes, and certifications can change between refreshes; the last verified date and source URL are listed on each brand page.
