Every dog supplement sold in the UK will tell you what is in it. Almost none will tell you how much, and that gap is where most of the money gets wasted. A tub listing glucosamine, omega-3, collagen and probiotics on the front can contain a genuinely useful amount of all four, or a decorative pinch of each, and the front of the pack reads exactly the same either way.
So here is the short version. The ingredients with the most convincing published evidence in dogs are omega-3 fatty acids (specifically EPA and DHA), the joint group of glucosamine, chondroitin and green-lipped mussel, and live probiotics measured in CFU. What separates a supplement that supports your dog from one that does nothing is whether those ingredients appear at amounts anywhere near the ones used in published trials. In the best-known canine omega-3 trial, the dose was 50 mg of EPA and 35 mg of DHA per kilogram of body weight, per day. For a 20 kg spaniel, that is 1,000 mg of EPA and 700 mg of DHA daily, which is far more than most UK supplements deliver in a single serving. Check the milligrams, not the ingredient list.
The four numbers worth checking on any label
If you only do one thing before buying, turn the tub around and look for these. If the label will not give you a per-serving figure in milligrams or CFU, that is itself the answer.

Why nobody prints the dose
Two reasons, and only one of them is cynical. The honest reason is that dogs range from a 2 kg Chihuahua to a 60 kg Newfoundland, so a single "contains 500 mg" figure is close to meaningless without a weight-based scoop. The less honest reason is that printing the number invites comparison, and a lot of products would not survive it.
The pattern shows up most clearly in soft chews. A chew has to hold its shape, stay palatable and not go off, which means glycerin, tapioca, gelling agents and flavourings all have to be in there taking up room. That is not a scandal, it is food technology, but it does mean a chew is carrying a substantial payload of things that are not nutrition. Powders skip most of that structural burden, which is why the same serving weight can carry considerably more active material. It is also worth knowing who polices the claims. In the UK, a daily supplement like this is a complementary feed, not a medicine. The Veterinary Medicines Directorate regulates veterinary medicines and has been vocal recently about pet health products marketed with claims that are not always evidence-based. Anything promising to cure, treat or prevent a condition has stepped outside what a feed supplement is allowed to say, and that is a useful filter when you are scrolling Instagram at eleven at night.
Omega-3: the best-evidenced number in the category
If one ingredient has earned its place, it is long-chain omega-3. The reason is that researchers have actually specified doses and then tested them, which is rarer than you would hope.
In a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice, twenty-nine dogs with itchy, allergic skin were supplemented for ten weeks with either flax oil at 200 mg/kg/day, a preparation providing EPA at 50 mg/kg/day and DHA at 35 mg/kg/day, or mineral oil as a placebo. Clinical scores improved in both supplemented groups and did not improve in the placebo group (Mueller et al., 2004). Interestingly, the total fatty acid intake and the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio did not predict who responded, which undercuts a lot of the ratio-based marketing you will see.
Doing the arithmetic on that trial dose gives you a rough sense of scale for your own dog:

Read this table as scale, not as a prescription. Those are the amounts used in one clinical trial in dogs with a specific skin condition, not a recommended daily intake for a healthy dog, and high-dose oils are not appropriate for every dog. Use it to judge whether a product is in the right ballpark, and talk to your vet before dosing at trial levels.
Joint ingredients and how long they take
The joint category is where owners are most likely to feel they have been sold a story, usually because they expected a result in a fortnight. The evidence suggests the timeline is genuinely slower than that.
In a randomised, double-blinded, controlled study across eighteen private veterinary practices, 127 client-owned dogs with osteoarthritis were fed for six months on either a typical commercial food or a test food containing a 31-fold increase in total omega-3 content. Owners of dogs on the test food reported significantly improved ability to rise from a resting position and to play at six weeks, and improved ability to walk at twelve and twenty-four weeks, compared with the control group (Roush et al., 2010).
Six weeks for the first change, three to six months for the fuller picture. That is the honest expectation to set, and it is why judging a joint supplement after one tub is not really a fair test. Probiotics: the strain matters as much as the number
CFU, or colony-forming units, tells you how many live organisms are in a serving. It is the number everyone quotes, and on its own it is only half a specification. Probiotic effects in dogs are strain-specific, so "contains probiotics, 5 billion CFU" without a named strain is a bit like being told a car has an engine.
The other thing worth checking is whether the CFU figure is guaranteed at the end of shelf life or measured at the point of manufacture. Live cultures decline in storage, and a number taken on the factory floor can flatter what is left in the tub by the time it reaches your kitchen. Working out the actives percentage yourself
This is the calculation that cuts through nearly all supplement marketing, and it takes about thirty seconds.
Add up the milligrams of every named active ingredient in one serving. Divide that by the total weight of the serving in milligrams. That is your actives percentage, and everything left over is filler, binder, flavouring or bulking agent.
A worked example: a 4 g scoop is 4,000 mg. If the label declares 3,200 mg of named actives across its ingredient list, you are at 80% actives. If a 5 g chew declares 1,750 mg of actives, you are at 35%, and the remaining 3,250 mg is structure and palatability. Both products might be perfectly safe and pleasant. They are not delivering the same amount of nutrition, and the price per tub will rarely tell you which is which.

What supplements should dogs take daily?
There is no universal daily requirement. A healthy adult dog eating a complete and balanced food is already meeting minimum nutritional standards. The dogs most likely to benefit from daily support are seniors, very active or working dogs, dogs on home-prepared or raw diets, and dogs with ongoing skin, coat or digestive niggles. If you are supplementing, the categories with the strongest canine evidence are omega-3, joint support ingredients and probiotics.
Do vets recommend supplements for dogs?
Many do, selectively and for specific reasons rather than as a blanket rule. Omega-3 is the ingredient most commonly suggested in practice, and joint support is frequently recommended for older or large-breed dogs. Vets are generally more sceptical about broad multivitamins for dogs already on a complete diet. Your vet knows your dog's history and any medication they are on, which matters because some supplement ingredients interact with prescribed treatments.
Are there any dog supplements that actually work?
Yes, though "work" needs defining. Published trials in dogs have shown measurable improvements with omega-3 supplementation in skin condition and in owner-reported mobility, at specified doses over weeks to months. What does not hold up is the expectation of a dramatic, fast transformation. Effects are gradual, they depend heavily on dose, and a supplement supports normal function rather than treating a diagnosed condition.

Can I give my dog human supplements instead?
It is not a good idea. Human products are dosed for a 70 kg adult, and some contain ingredients that are genuinely dangerous to dogs, xylitol in chewable vitamins being the one that catches people out most often. Fat-soluble vitamins such as A and D accumulate and can cause harm at the wrong dose. Use products formulated and dosed for dogs.
Can I give my dog Weetabix?
A small piece of plain Weetabix is unlikely to do a healthy dog any harm, but it is not a supplement and it is not doing much nutritionally. It is mostly wheat, so it is unsuitable for dogs with a wheat sensitivity, and it adds calories without adding anything your dog needs. If you are reaching for it because your dog's digestion seems off, a named fibre source or probiotic is a far more targeted option.
Do dogs on homemade or raw diets need supplements?
They usually need more careful attention than dogs on complete commercial food. Home-prepared diets are difficult to balance across micronutrients, and gaps in zinc, iodine, vitamin D and manganese are common even in well-intentioned recipes. How long before I see a difference?
Coat and skin changes tend to be the first thing owners notice, often within four to eight weeks, because coat grows out gradually. Digestive changes such as firmer stools can show up sooner. Mobility is the slowest, with the research above showing owner-reported changes at six weeks and continuing to twelve and twenty-four weeks. Give any supplement a fair three months before deciding.
